Dan Raab

Clinical Psychology Registrar
PhD Candidate (Clinical Psychology)
Psychoanalytical Psychotherapist

Individual psychotherapy for adults navigating trauma, relational difficulties, and longstanding psychological pain.

About

I'm a Clinical Psychology Registrar based in Fremantle. My doctoral thesis in clinical psychology is currently under examination.

My clinical work is exploratory and insight-focused, drawing primarily on a psychoanalytic framework — an approach that takes seriously the deep patterns of relating that shape how we experience ourselves and the people around us. Where helpful, I also draw on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and existential and humanistic approaches.

I work exclusively with adults and have experience across the lifespan in public sector mental health settings including child and adolescent mental health, drug and alcohol youth services, sexual assault and trauma, and rural and regional health. Prior to training in psychology, I served in the Australian Defence Force — an experience that has given me a genuine appreciation of the pressures and cultures that military and veteran communities carry.

Who I work with

I work with adults (18+) navigating complex and longstanding psychological difficulties, particularly where earlier experiences have shaped how a person relates to themselves and to others.

Complex trauma and post-traumatic stress

Including childhood sexual abuse, neglect, and service-related trauma.

Personality difficulties

Including difficulties with emotional regulation, self-acceptance, self-criticism, and stability in close relationships.

Relational and identity difficulties

Persistent difficulties in relationships, an uncertain sense of self, and patterns that feel genuinely hard to shift.

Depression and anxiety

Including chronic and treatment-resistant presentations with complex developmental underpinnings.

Military and veterans' mental health

Including ADF transition, service-related trauma, and the particular difficulties of life after service.

Alcohol and drug difficulties

Including addiction and comorbid presentations alongside other psychological difficulties.

If you're unsure whether your difficulties fit, please feel free to get in touch.

Referrals and fees

I accept referrals from GPs under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, through the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA), and directly from individuals without a referral. A referral addressed to me by name is sufficient — please forward it prior to intake where relevant.

Fees are discussed prior to commencement, and accounts are invoiced following each session. Cancellations within 24 hours will incur the full session fee, and telehealth is available via a secure video platform.

GPs and other health professionals are always welcome to call or email before making a referral — I'm happy to have a brief conversation first.
